Oyo Ile is Katunga in Hausa while Yoruba's are Yarriba's in Hausa.

The ancient Hausa people of the present day Nigeria call Yoruba people of Oyo Ile, "YARRIBA" and Oyo Ile (capital of the Yoruba speaking People) was known to Hausa people as, "KATUNGA." You might have seen some European writers refer to Yoruba's as Yarriba's and Oyo Ile as Katunga. Do not be confuse, they are simply talking about Yoruba's from the Hausa point of view and historical account.

Yarriba was derived from the Yoruba word of the Oyo people. Do not let the white man error misinform you. Oyo Ile people(Yoruba's) refer to themselves first as Yoruba speaking people before the Hausa's derived Yarriba from Yoruba according to their language. The Yoruba people of Oyo Ile has a saying that goes thus, " Ajise bi Oyo lanri, Oyo onise bi enikan okan." Simply means that Oyo people(Yoruba's) never pretended to be anybody else but themselves.

An English man is English, because he speaks English. As a Yoruba speaking man, you can call me a Yoruba. What do you call French speaking people?
